To access virtual machine datastore usage

Toviewtheusageofasingledatastoreratherthanthecontentsofallvirtual
machinedatastores,clicktheDatastorestab,movethepointeroverthedatastore
name,andchooseDetailsfromthemenu.
Assessing Virtual Machine Disk Space
Stage Managerhelpsadministratorsmaintaindatastorecontentbyprovidingagraphic
viewofdiskspaceusage.WhiletheDiskSpaceFreedUponDeletion(MB)columnon
theVirtualMachineDatastoreUsagepageinformsyouhowmuchtotalstorage
(inclusiveofthespaceoccupiedbyhiddennodesassociatedwiththevirtualmachine)
can
bereclaimedupondeletionofavirtualmachine,thecontextviewonthatsame
pageprovidesthehighleveltopographyofdirectoriesthatyoucanusetoidentify
“hidden”nodesintheinteriorareaofthedirectorystructure.Usethisviewtoassess
thediskspacethatwouldbecomeavailable
ifyoudeletedaparticularvirtualmachine
anditschainofinternalnodes.
Deletingavirtualmachineactuallymeansdeletingthestorageoccupiedbythevirtual
machinedirectoryandancestordirectoriesthatcanbesafelydeleted.Stage Manager
storesfilesina“tree”ofrelatedlinkedclones.Foroperationssuchascloning,
Stage Managercreatesadeltadiskinsteadofcopyinganentirevirtualharddisk.With
eachchange,Stage Managerfreezestheoriginaldeltadiskandcreatesanewone.The
virtualmachinediskasawholeconsistsofitsowndeltadiskandthedeltadisksof
ancestordisks.
Youcannotdeletean
ancestornodeundertheseconditions:
Theancestordirectoryhasotherchilddirectoriesdependentonit.
Avirtualmachine(forexample,atemplateorvirtualmachineintheconfiguration
library)isassociatedwiththatancestornode.
Anothernodeusestheancestornodeasarevertpoint.Forexample,afullclone
operationmightconsolidateandcreateanewdiskbutrefertotherevertpointof
theoriginalchain.
